The Perfect Investor Update

How to write updates that build trust, preempt questions, and secure your next round of funding.

The investor update is not a chore; it is a strategic asset. Consistent, transparent updates are the single strongest predictor of a founder's ability to raise follow-on capital. They train your investors to trust your judgment, especially when things go wrong.

Frequency and Cadence

Pre-Seed / Seed: Monthly. No exceptions.
Series A: Monthly or Quarterly, depending on board cadence, but monthly flash updates are strongly preferred by top-tier firms.

Send it on the same day every month (e.g., the 3rd business day). Consistency implies operational control. If your update is late, the assumption is that the news is bad.

The Anatomy of the Update

A great update takes an investor 3 minutes to read and leaves them with zero operational questions. It follows a strict, predictable format.

The "Bad News" Rule

Never hide bad news in a footnote, and never wait for a board meeting to deliver it. Investors deal with failing startups every day; they are comfortable with risk and failure. What they are not comfortable with is surprises.

Framing bad news correctly builds massive credibility: "Here is what broke, here is why we think it broke, and here is exactly what we are doing to fix it."
